When Flowers Just Are Not For You

As a couple, a bride and groom are often told “It’s your wedding, and you can do what you want!” However, if you decide that flowers aren’t going to use flowers, some people may not understand. Flowers are a traditional wedding accompaniment, but today, less than traditional weddings are common, and having flowers present is not longer a necessity.

Having flowers at your wedding may not be for everyone, and is a very personal decision. If you decide for one reason or another that your wedding doesn’t need to utilize flowers at all, here are a few ideas for sprucing up your wedding decoration in lieu of florals;

1) Try greenery instead: Ferns, knotted fichus trees, bushy plants, ivy and palm trees all make for fabulous and beautiful wedding greenery instead of flowers. If you decide to skip flowers and opt for greenery instead, choose plants with beautiful and intricately textured leaves, interesting trunks, and are bright and bushy. Green plants make fabulous decoration because they take up a great deal of space and add the outdoors to indoor ceremonies and receptions.

2) Make use of metallics: For a very chic wedding, opt for silver and gold decorations in confetti, streamers, hanging curtains, candleholders and more. Metallic motifs are very contemporary and look clean and elegant if done correctly, and flowers clash in this case anyway.

3) Go big on decorations: If you decide to go with a theme wedding that is not usually flower appropriate, like Halloween, “biker” or “under the sea,” then you can use decorations instead of flowers. For Halloween weddings, replace flowers with colorful candy, for “biker” weddings, use leather and lace, and for an “under the sea” theme, think beachy themes.

4) Use other natural elements: Coral, sand, rocks, cactus, feathers, waterfalls, fountains, marble and other beautiful natural elements can easily take the place of flowers at weddings. Instead of flowers as centerpieces, use chunks of brightly colored coral and sand, and instead of a floral bouquet, carry one made of draped leaves instead.

5) Think outside the box: Find a location that is already so wild and interesting that flowers would simply clash or not be necessary. Consider having your wedding at a local fun park, at the beach or even at a local garden! If you just don’t want the hassle of picking out flowers, but don’t mind them being at your wedding, then having it in a beautiful garden is the answer for you. That way, your location comes with flowers that you don’t have to worry about for free!

Deciding not to have flowers at your wedding isn’t strange, and if you want a contemporary wedding your own way, then don’t let friends or family make you feel strange. Flowers are an extremely personal and expensive touch to weddings that not everyone decides to employ. So if florals aren’t for you, consider other options to decorate without them and make it a reflection of you and your partner’s interests and love for one another.
